A Taste of Fall

It is certainly starting to feel like fall in our area. Rivers and streams remain at optimal levels for this time of year actually we've been experiencing stream flows much more like spring than fall. The weather has been cooling off too, this should bring about a change in tactics. While I have been seeing Caddis and Blue Wing Olives hatching and flying, it is probably a good idea to focus on subsurface precision nymphing to generate numbers in your trout game. That means fishing on the bottom; beadhead or similarly weighted flies are a good point fly followed by a small Flashback Pheasant Tail Nymph #20-22 or a Zebra Midge of the same size. Fall Stocking: Tips and Tactics

Major rivers in North Jersey were or will be stocked this week with the South Branch including the Ken Lockwood Gorge stocked tomorrow. It's been a wet summer and fall so far. Rivers and streams are flowing above normal. That bodes well for the Fall Stocking as the fish will have a chance to spread out in the days and weeks to come. These Rainbows are big too, 14-21 inch two and three year old fish from the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife's Pequest Hatchery. Rivers Dropping As Fall Stocking Nears

Abundant rains and a scheduled release have New Jersey rivers at very healthy levels less than a week away from the much anticipated 2018 Fall Stocking. Scheduled lowering of Lake Hopatcong has the Musconetcong River up and flowing briskly (above 475 cfs). What does this mean for those of you who like to fish for trout? The Fall Stocking consists of a one time distribution of 2-3 year old Rainbow Trout. Mostly two year olds in the 14-16" Class with healthy numbers of 20-21" three year old trout. Also, thank to the higher than average flows, trout stocked are likely to disburse making for a longer season.
