Welcome to summer! So far this season we've seen a return to normal flows and temperatures. Yes, the water warms in summer but that doesn't mean and end to trout fishing. What it does mean is that it is time to pay attention to conditions. The abundant rains especially in April meant that anglers often didn't fish on stocking days. This means that there are still quite a few stocked fish available and the wild Trout - Rainbows, Browns and Brookies are enjoying the higher flows to keep on feeding. So if water isn't an issue this year, then where are we with water temperatures? This is a key since the lower the water temp the higher the water's ability to hold dissolved oxygen which is critical for trout respiration. Humidity has a role in stream temps, if the evenings have been dry and cool, the water will cool down overnight. If it's a warm and muggy night, the water will not cool significantly overnight. I prefer to fish for trout when the water temps are at 68 degrees or lower. Fishing early in the morning is the perfect strategy here. Also, on a cool evening (tonight the air temp was 65 degrees), the evening dry fly fishing was game on, water temp was about 67 degrees and the fish were active and jumping after being hooked. The rain forecast this weekend will be followed by very pleasant temps through Thursday night. The fishing should be good- pick your spots and times, but definitely give it a try.
