Sparse Grey Matter Fly Tying Fest & Belize?

Fishing over the weekend was productive for some. The trout are there but it was probably best to fish in the late morning or afternoon to maximize success with a little bump in stream temps. This Thursday and Friday it looks like we'll be warming up a bit. Bring the usual suspects in your box- think midges and stoneflies along with a few egg patterns. We are really looking forward to our annual Sparse Grey Matter Fly Tying Fest this Sunday February 24th. The event is held at the Califon Firehouse here in Califon and will run from 10am until 4pm. Fly Tyers from around the region including outstanding representation from various groups including Trout Unlimited and Kids on the Fly, will be on hand to demonstrate their skills. The event is free to the public and guests are welcome to bring their fly tying equipment as tables will be available. The event is free of charge and is sponsored by Shannon's and Dette's Flies. Lunch is available and all proceeds will benefit the Califon Volunteer Fire Department. We usually offer items for auction to offset the expense of the hall.

Looks like Wednesday we will have some more winter weather. Shannon's is set to host our first "Hot Stove Fly Fishing" evening with Tim Flagler this Wednesday, February 20th. We may have to bump it back to the next night, Thursday February 21st. It's a great night with a catered dinner and a small group. Upcoming evenings include Matt Grobert on February 27th and John Collins and I presenting on local Hatches March 6th and 13th. The cost of the evening is $35.00 and two additional return outings with presenters will be scheduled in the spring. Attending the fishing event is $75.00 for the public. I spoke with my friend, Dave Mckenna today. Many of you know him from his outstanding work with Douglas Outdoors. Among several endeavors he is leading trips to Tarpon Caye Lodge in Belize. He has a few openings, no more than four for a trip in April 21-28th. It's a great way to kick the winter blues. He told me a fly he designed recently caught 10 permit last week. NBC filmed an episode of "On the Fly" with Dave last year. He can reached for inquiries by phone: (908) 812-8275.
