September was an interesting month. As wet as it was in the first half of the year, even into the beginning of August; September was really dry. Now as we head into October, we're starting to see a little more rain and definitely cooler nights. While many anglers are heading north to the Salmon River to enjoy the solid run of Kings and Cohos, those of us left behind have had some solid trout fishing with more to look forward to. Beginning the week of October 8th, the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife will commence its Fall Trout Stocking. Look for about 20,000 two year old Rainbows between 14-18" to be stocked on a one shot deal in major rivers and streams. Dry fly fishing has been very good the last several weeks. You do have to move to find the fish. Egg laying Caddis, Blue Wing Olives and Light Cahills have been over the water consistently especially late in the afternoon into the early evening. There should be some Tricos around in the morning along with Tan Caddis and BWO's. I wouldn't neglect soft hackles that might imitate an emerging Caddis right now either in sizes 16-18, Olive is likely the most consistent color. In the short term, I would concentrate on small flies and lighter tippets until the new fish are stocked. Then, it will be time for the egg and worm patterns as the new fish look for color and movement.
